Telegram Account Reset: What It Deletes and Why It Waits 7 Days
The Reset account option is Telegram's built-in last resort when you're locked out of your OWN Two-Step Verification password. It doesn't recover anything — it deletes your account and every cloud chat after a 7-day security wait, then frees your number for a fresh start. Here's exactly what happens, when it can be cancelled, and who should stop before tapping it.
Recover your password firstSee all recovery optionsYou can confirm every path here against Telegram's own in-app help and telegram.org — we link to the mechanics, we don't gatekeep them.
These reflect Telegram's documented reset behavior for a recently active account; the wait can be shorter for long-dormant accounts. No one — not Telegram support, not us — can shorten or skip the 7-day timer.
How it works
- 1Enter your number, get a login codeTelegram sends a one-time code — to your existing in-app session first, then SMS, then a voice call.
- 2You hit the cloud-password wallAfter the code, Telegram asks for your Two-Step Verification password and shows your recovery-email hint if one is set.
- 3Try the recovery email — before anything destructiveTap 'Forgot password?' and use the recovery-email hint; if it works you keep your account and chats and never reset.
- 4Choose 'Reset account' — the point of no returnIf recovery fails, Telegram offers to reset, with a warning that this deletes the account and all cloud chats.
- 5The 7-day security countdown startsFor a recently active account, Telegram schedules the deletion 7 days out; because the real owner may still be signed in on another device, simply logging in during the wait cancels the reset.
- 6Deletion completes, the number is freedAfter the wait the account and its chats are erased; you can register a fresh account on the same number, but old history does not return.
There is no fast lane. The 7-day wait is an anti-takeover delay baked into Telegram's servers; if anyone offers to remove or speed it up for a fee, that's a scam.

FAQ
Reset is a last resort, not a recovery trick
If any device is still signed in, or you set a recovery email, you almost certainly don't need to delete anything — recover first and keep your chats. Reset only makes sense when you own the account, you're fully locked out of your cloud password, and you accept that the account and its history will be erased after the 7-day wait. Whatever route you take, it runs through Telegram's own flows, and no one ever needs your login code.
